In anime and manga (and I guess real life), how do the Japanese school sections work?

While I watch and read a bit…I’ve never figured out the Japanese school system. What is 2B versus 3F? Do they go by year? Are the letters denoting general scholastic ability? Is A better than C?

What’s the equivalency to the American system? (9-12 grade = ??? in Japan)

In Japan their school system is really different from our own.
Firstly they dont have primary or highschool. They have primary school (years one to six), middle school or secondary school (basically years 7,8,9,10) and then senior school (years 11,12).

For your question, the first letter 2 in 2B or 3 in 3F is the year they are in. If they are in secondary school and their classroom is 2B, they are in year eight, because year eight is the second year of secondary school. The B in 2B or the F in 3F and so on is just the class they are put into.
